Bolsonaro detained after being deemed a escape threat

Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
