RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages down to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
