Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a intense examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when the couple transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
