Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to question particular calls made by the official, following the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
